Welcome back to another episode of health hacks. As I round out the month talking about key organs. We've already talked about the liver, the kidney, the heart, and now we are on to your digestive system. And today I want to talk to you about why it deserves more respect and care. And to understand that you need to understand what it does. And first off, I want to start off by saying 70% of your immune system is housed in your digestive system, and in your gut. And therefore, if your digestive system is functioning, well, your immune system is stronger. So right there, that's a major reason to look after your digestive system. Also, we eat food for energy, and many people are struggling with low energy. And part of that could be that your digestive system isn't functioning optimally, and therefore the food isn't being broken down well, and the nutrients aren't getting to the cells that need them in order for you to enjoy good energy.
Melissa Deally:So your digestive tract is performing several crucial functions that are absolutely essential for maintaining your overall health. And that's why I want to bring this to your attention because sometimes we just don't pay attention. And we don't realize how important this is to our overall health. Now your digestive system is not only has mechanical digestion, which is the chewing the mechanical function of chewing, using your teeth, to break down food into smaller pieces, as well as squeezing the food down through your digestive tract and moving it all the way along through the process. As well as chemical digestion. So this is the salivary enzymes in the digestive enzymes that the body produces in order to help break down the food that we are eating. And that is secreted in the form of digestive juices, enzymes, bile and mucus that are all part of this digestive process, that you don't give a moment's thought to because it all happens and is run by the unconscious mind without you giving it a single moment's thought. However, if you become more aware, and you choose to chew your meals, more like try counting the number of choose for each mouthful you take instead of it being the average of five to seven choose increase that to 20 Choose, that's using more of your mind mechanical digestion and requires less of the chemical digestion throughout the rest of the digestive tract. And if your digestive system is struggling, that is going to help your body still be able to get more from the nutrients of the food that you're eating. And in addition to that, of course, absorption is key the uptake of those nutrients, such as the amino acids, the fatty acids, vitamins, the minerals and the water that your body needs and getting them from the digestive tract into your bloodstream and lymphatic system, so that they can get to the cells that need all of that for you to have good energy. And then there's the excretion piece to eliminating indigestible substances and waste products and whatever the body doesn't need to get those out of your body. So these are the key functions of your digestive tract. Namely the absorption of the nutrients main and maintain a can't say that maintenance of overall health and protection against disease because of 70% of your immune system being housed in your digestive tract. So just thought you might like to be aware of that. Think about how you can slow down when you're eating two more times for every mouthful in order to improve your overall digestive system and absorption of those nutrients. And if you do have gut issues such as
Melissa Deally:stomach upset after eating, cramps, gas, etc. Perhaps it's heartburn, acid reflux, all of those are signs that something is not functioning optimally within your gut. And all of those can be addressed through functional medicine, options and natural health options in order to help you regain your gut health and therefore your overall health and if you would like support with that, please feel free to reach out Melissa at your guided health journey.com
