HH568: Encore Presentation-Stress: How It Impacts Your Cognitive Function

Today, I want to talk about how it impairs your memory, concentration, and your cognitive function.

About the Host:

Melissa is an Integrative Health Practitioner and a Board Designated Trainer of NLP, Time Line Therapy®, Hypnotherarpy, and NLP Results Coaching, helping people get to the root cause of their health issues and then get lasting results. Melissa neither diagnoses nor cures but helps bring your body back into balance by helping discover your “toxic load” and then removing the toxins. Melissa offers functional medicine lab testing that helps you “see inside” to know exactly what is going on, and then provides a personalized wellness protocol using natural herbs and supplements.  Melissa’s business is 100% virtual – the lab tests are mailed directly to your home and she specializes in holding your hand and guiding the way to healing so that you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.

Melissa has launched Amplify Impact Academy, with business partner, Billie Aadmi and together they train other coaches, practitioners and counsellors in the 4 mind-body healing modalities mentioned above, giving them powerful tools to use with clients to get results with greater ease, speed and grace. These courses teach life skills and anyone can take them, if you wanto be a better leader, parent, partner, be empowered in your own life, these courses are for you!

Melissa’s passion project is her non-profit, Girls Matter (www.girlsmatter.ca), breaking the poverty cycle 1 girl, 1 family, 1 village at a time.  The mission is to keep girls in school and stop teenage marriages, because school isn’t free in over 50 countries around the world and when parents have to make the difficult choices of feeding their kids or paying for school, food wins. And when the girls hit their teen years, they will often be married off so that someone else becomes responsible to feed them. Keeping girls in school instead creates a generational ripple effect, because an educated girl is more than twice as likely to ensure her on children are educated. Educating girls also grows the GDP of countries, when they get into the workforce. This is how together, we can change the world. Guests on this podcast are invited to donate to this important cause. Learn more here in this short video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1R3-xqzJLZW14om1PhFClcU_oRSZ8zgip/view?usp=share_link

Melissa Deally:

Welcome back to another episode of health hacks

Melissa Deally:

as I continue talking about stress and how it impacts

Melissa Deally:

various aspects of your life, health and ability to function

Melissa Deally:

at optimal levels. And today, I want to talk about how it

Melissa Deally:

impairs your memory and your concentration, your cognitive

Melissa Deally:

function. Overall, chronic stress can affect your brain

Melissa Deally:

function, and you intuitively already know this, because when

Melissa Deally:

you're stressed out, you're feeling like there's that ping,

Melissa Deally:

ping, ping, ping, going on in your brain, and you can't

Melissa Deally:

actually land on one thing. And as a result, you struggle to

Melissa Deally:

remember things. You struggle to focus. You struggle in your

Melissa Deally:

decision making abilities, and in that moment, recognize that,

Melissa Deally:

ah, it's stress that's causing this. What can I do in order to

Melissa Deally:

calm my nervous system? And so, as with all of these episodes

Melissa Deally:

I've been doing, I love to give you some tips of different

Melissa Deally:

things that you can implement in your life to help calm your

Melissa Deally:

nervous system. And some of them you're going to hear me saying,

Melissa Deally:

you're going to be like, yep, not doing that. It's not for me,

Melissa Deally:

and that's okay. Keep tuning in, because every session, I am

Melissa Deally:

giving you another tip, and in at least one of them out of the

Melissa Deally:

12 that I'm running this month, you will find something that you

Melissa Deally:

enjoy, that helps you calm your nervous system each and every

Melissa Deally:

day, so that you don't get into this place of chronic stress

Melissa Deally:

where you can't focus, can't make decisions, and can't sleep,

Melissa Deally:

etc, etc. So my tip for today is to find a hobby that you love.

Melissa Deally:

What is it that brings you joy that you can lose time in when

Melissa Deally:

you do it? Is it something such as reading, taking some time to

Melissa Deally:

read every day, lose yourself in the story in a book. Is it

Melissa Deally:

gardening, losing yourself in nature outside and feeling the

Melissa Deally:

soil in your on your hands and fingers, which is actually

Melissa Deally:

great, because then you're getting some of the microbes in

Melissa Deally:

the soil into your body that support your gut health as well.

Melissa Deally:

Is it painting? Is it some other kind of craft that you enjoy

Melissa Deally:

doing that allows you to just relax into that activity and

Melissa Deally:

push everything else that's going on in your world outside

Melissa Deally:

of it, while you take that time to lose yourself in pure joy.

Melissa Deally:

And sometimes we feel like I don't have a right to do that.

Melissa Deally:

I'm too busy. I have all of these things that I need to get

Melissa Deally:

done. I don't have time. And the reality is is that in that

Melissa Deally:

stressed out state where you can't focus, where you can't

Melissa Deally:

make decisions, where you're struggling to remember things,

Melissa Deally:

you are not productive anyway, so everything is taking longer,

Melissa Deally:

and that's frustrating, and that adds to your stress. If you

Melissa Deally:

instead take half an hour out of your day to calm your mind, you

Melissa Deally:

can come back to whatever else it is that you're trying to get

Melissa Deally:

done from a place of being able to focus, being able to remember

Melissa Deally:

things, being able to make decisions, and therefore you are

Melissa Deally:

much more productive. I know it sounds counterintuitive,

Melissa Deally:

however, it truly works. So what have you got to lose? Give it a

Melissa Deally:

try and see if that helps you get out of chronic stress and

Melissa Deally:

into a place of being more productive. And as you do that,

Melissa Deally:

and you get yourself out of chronic stress, you're also

Melissa Deally:

supporting all of your other factors in your health that I've

Melissa Deally:

been talking about thus far in terms of stress will not be

Melissa Deally:

negatively impacting them anymore, because you're getting

Melissa Deally:

yourself out of that Chronic stress state. If stress is

Melissa Deally:

something that you struggle with and you feel like you need some

Melissa Deally:

more support with in the interim, as you make some of

Melissa Deally:

these lifestyle changes, please reach out to me, Melissa, at

Melissa Deally:

your guided health journey.com. Because there are some natural

Melissa Deally:

supplements that can help your body calm. There's also some lab

Melissa Deally:

testing that we can do to see what your cortisol levels are,

Melissa Deally:

what time of day they're out of balance, so that we can really

Melissa Deally:

tune in and create a customized plan for you to help you get out

Melissa Deally:

of your chronic stress state and into a healthy state of moving

Melissa Deally:

between your parasympathetic and your sympathetic nervous systems

Melissa Deally:

as you should, As opposed to being stuck in your chronic

Melissa Deally:

stress, sympathetic nervous system all day long.

About the Podcast

Don't Wait For Your Wake Up Call!
with Melissa Deally, Integrative Health Practitioner
As an Integrative Health Practitioner I have come to realize that we simply haven't been taught how to optimize our health, and that the average person has habits that are negatively impacting their health, due to this lack of knowledge, through no fault of their own. Public health and our school system simply don't teach us enough about nutrition, sleep, stress, gut health or how interconnected our bodies are! Modern life has us more sleep deprived, stressed out and the sickest ever, and I believe it is time to bring this education to you, so that you CAN be empowered in your health and you can then make the right choices for you and your family. The choices you make today impact your future 1 year, 5 years, 10 years + from now. It is never too early to start looking after your health, as Health is your TRUE wealth....without it what do you have?

I use this podcast to support my passion project - non-profit, Girls Matter (www.girlsmatter.ca), breaking the poverty cycle 1 girl, 1 family, 1 village at a time.
